About This Item

The ancient Egyptians are famous for their desire to conquer death and live forever. Kings and queens, nobles and bureaucrats, artists and farmers all shared this desire. But clearly, not everyone could afford a golden coffin, a statue made from granite or rare imported woods, or a pyramid to house them. People of lesser ranks learned to utilize cheaper materials for the same purposes.

Coffin of the Lady of the House combines the mummy board in “everyday dress” with the lid of the inner coffin, usually a separate piece. This design saved considerable effort and resources. More expensive sets included a separate mummy board that rested on top of the mummy and inside the coffin.

Anthropoid Coffin of the Servant of the Great Place, Teti, is an early example of a type of coffin that became typical in the Nineteenth Dynasty; these coffins were painted with red, black, white, blue, and green, then varnished, turning the background yellow. Both of these coffins are in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum.

5 each of 2 full-color blank notecards with envelopes in a decorative cover.
